COVER GIRL: Our cover girl this month is VALERIE AUSTIN. I’m sure there are many amongst us who know of a friend, colleague or family member who is suffering from alcoholism. But now there is an opportunity to help in a very positive way. Valerie, author of five best-selling books, has spent the last 14 years helping people to better their lives with her highly successful ‘Austin Technique’. This special technique has received worldwide acclaim for ‘getting results’ and as a result of its success shecontracted Brunel University to undertake research and support a project proving that qualified hypnotherapy can help alcoholics combat their problem. Valerie is raising funds for this project and I recently helped her to organise a Gala Dinner & Auction at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London, one of many fundraising events she will be doing in the next twelve months. : www.valerieaustin.com www.austin-corporate.co.uk

Other super performers were Britain’s top Belly Dancer JACQUELINE CHAPMAN, who is well known for her classic and elegant style of dancing. She has performed on numerous TV shows and entertained a world-wide audience.

A special guest appearance was the well known International concert pianist EMANUELE VICUSO who flew in from a concert in Italy especially for the event. And it was such a delight to meet this charming talented artist. Emanuele, who was born in Palermo, moves in social circles all over Europe and the United States where he now lives. I’m told that he often offers his talent to help with charities. Well done all of these great people who helped to make the event a great success.

STAY SAFE

In today’s uncertain world filled with crime and acts of terror, women are more at risk of being physically attacked than ever before. How often do we hear of women being brutally raped – even murdered? And with a police force so overworked and understaffed, what chance do the victims have? How can women protect themselves in these dangerous times?

Jacquieline Davis, known as the world’s top female bodyguard, is only too aware of the problem. As well as training both male and female bodyguards and teaching classes on self-protection, she gives lectures both in Britain and the USA, and has now produced her first self-protection video, especially for women. Stay Safe - Be Aware, Learn How to Protect Yourself released in UK October 2003 by Lucky Press www.luckypress.com is a fascinating and informative video featuring easy techniques that aim to teach women ‘how to get out of compromising situations and stay alive’. It explains how to protect oneself from kidnapping, rape, fire, mugging and other dangerous situations. For fifteen years JACQUIELINE survived as one of the top operators in a male dominated profession - the secretive, often dangerous world of covert operations. After leaving the Metropolitan Police Force she worked as a bodyguard for an Arabian princess. It was, according to Jacquieline, the worst enemy due to boredom. But her training – which included combat training - and a willingness to risk everything for "the client" led her into increasingly dangerous undercover operations, such as hostage rescues in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, a daring infiltration of a cocaine cartel ... and more!

Her book, The Circuit was published by Penguin (UK) in 1998 and is now updated with the author's new adventures. The Circuit (published October 2003 by Lucky Press) is a fascinating account of one woman’s amazing experiences involving the dangerous job of rescuing children and adults around the world to the more glittering world of guarding well-known celebrities such as DIANA ROSS and J.K. ROWLING. Check out Jacquieline’s CRIME & SAFETY Column right her on HOT GOSSIP or visit her website: www.femalebodyguard.com

GOODBYE TO DEAR FRIENDS

The last month has been an extremely sad time, having lost three friends. GRAHAM BIRDSALL, editor of UFO MAGAZINE, died unexpectedly of a brain haemorrhage at age 49, and will be missed by all who knew him. Graham was a kind and thoughtful person and worked extremely hard to produce his specialised publication. My thoughts are with his wife CHRISTINE and their children.

It was also very sad to hear from BARONESS STEFANIA VON KORIES ZU GOETZEN that BIBA, DUCHESS of MANCHESTER had died after losing her fight with cancer. In the 1980s and early 90’s Biba was as a stunning beauty and socialite, but had moved to the USA in recent years. Biba returned to England to launch her business only to discover later that she was terminally ill. Her children ALEXANDER and MICHELLE organised a funeral service with an angelic choir at the Brompton Oratory in Knightsbridge. Biba will be missed by many.

No sooner had I heard about Biba’s demise when I heard from author CLIVE PRINCE that his co-author STEPHEN PRIOR lost his battle against lung cancer. Like Clive said, it seems incredible that someone with so much energy and enthusiasm - and so much personality - is no longer with us. Along with LYNN PICKNETT and Clive, Stephen authored DOUBLE STANDARDS, THE Rudolph Hess Cover-Up and WAR OF THE WINDSORS.

Until next month
