Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2012 Weird World column and the latest round-up of news and views on the unexplained, the weird and the wonderful.
National Archives UFO Files
The effort to declassify and release the entire archive of Ministry of Defence UFO files continues and will reach its climax later this year. The decision to release the files was taken in 2007 and the process started in May 2008 with the release of the first batch of files. Additional batches have been released every six months or so. Because I worked on these files, have been involved in the release process and am the media's 'go to guy' for stories about UFOs, I've done literally hundreds of TV, radio and newspaper interviews on this story. Interest has been global and I've discussed this story on all the major news networks, as well as on shows such as Larry King Live and Good Morning America. Check out nickpope.net for more details of this story and watch for developments as this story reaches its climax and I give my final verdict on the MoD UFO files.
Late Spring and Summer inevitably see crop circles appearing at various locations in South and South West England, mainly in the counties of Wiltshire and Hampshire. Whether one believes these patterns are made by people, extraterrestrials, Gaia or some sort of meteorological phenomenon, there's no getting away from the fact that they still excite the imagination and intrigue skeptics and believers alike. Check out Lucy Pringle's website at www.lucypringle.co.uk for more details and www.circlemakers.org for a more skeptical view from some of the people who claim to make them.
The Calvine UFO Photo
There has been much recent media coverage of the intriguing story of the mysterious disappearance of the best UFO photographs ever sent to the Ministry of Defence. The photos were taken near Calvine, close to Pitlochry in Scotland, in 1990, by two hikers. They sent the images to a newspaper and the paper subsequently sent them to the MoD, looking for a comment. The UFO was metallic silver in colour and diamond shaped, and there was a military jet in the background of one of the images. MoD's technical experts assessed that the photos were genuine and that the object was approximately 25 metres in diameter. Internal MoD documents relating to these photos have been released as part of the ongoing program to declassify and release MoD's UFO files, but the photographs themselves have disappeared. Although various newspapers have printed reconstructions of the images, based on my description and on the MoD documents, all that remains is a single line drawing drawn up by MoD staffs as part of the process to estimate the object's size. Check out nickpope.net for the full story.
The line drawing of the Calvine UFO photo
Over my last few columns I've written extensively about 2012 and the idea that the world will end on 21st December 2012, as many people believe is predicted by the Mayan calendar. I've also discussed this extensively in the media. I was commissioned by The Sun to write a major newspaper feature on the subject, giving an overview of the various theories. This in turn led to my being asked to do various TV and radio interviews on the subject. Expect interest in this topic to build further in the run-up to 21st December. For the record, I'm personally skeptical that anything unusual will happen, let alone that the world will end. As with all the hype over Nostradamus and The Rapture, as long as one doesn't take these sorts of predictions seriously, they're a bit of fun and a nice excuse to hold an end of the world party. False Flag Alien Invasion at the London Olympics
One of the most bizarre conspiracy theories being discussed at present is the idea that a fake alien attack will be staged at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. A combination of special effects and holographic technology will apparently be used to create the illusion of an alien invasion. To counter the apparent threat, the powers that be will declare martial law, ushering in a New World Order. Many people believe that 9/11 was a 'false flag' attack aimed at taking away freedoms. This "false flag alien invasion" (Google the phrase to see just how widespread the idea has become) is arguably the same principle, but on a bigger scale. Believers think alien invasion sci-fi movies and documentaries are part of this plan, preparing us psychologically for the idea of an extraterrestrial attack. They cite Ronald Reagan's 1987 address to the United Nations as a clue, when he said: "I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world." Arguably, this is just a variation on Project Blue Beam, a conspiracy theory, part of which involves using holograms to fake a "Second Coming" and create a new world religion controlled by the ruling elite. Intriguingly, the alien attack is predicted for the Olympic Closing Ceremony on August 12, on the basis that the date has special "occult significance". I'm personally skeptical about a false flag alien invasion theory, but it's a failsafe prediction because if it doesn't happen, its supporters will doubtless claim that by disclosing the details, they prematurely exposed and thereby thwarted the New World Order's fiendish plans.
