Potential Unlimited

This last month has been a testy time. From managing intricate marketing campaigns with scarily high budgets to dealing with over emotional and irrational clients!

The former I rather enjoy, the bigger the challenge the more I excel, but the latter really does get my goat. I have always maintained the utmost professionalism with my work and have gained trust and respect from all the people I work with and for. But how do you handle the situation when an established client with whom you've had an excellent, long term business relationship, suddenly, out of the blue, questions your integrity and honesty. Do you sue them; put it down to experience and move on; have sleepless nights, whatever option you choose, decide upon the route that gives you peace of mind and when you look back you can hold your head up and say 'I was still professional'.

Running your own small business throws up all sorts of daily confrontations and challenges, I, for the most part, enjoy these negotiations and each time come away having learnt something new. It's how we grow as people and become better and more efficient in our jobs and personal lives. One thing to remember in business, is simply that, business is business. Don't ever get personal or cross that line of professionalism, it will come back to haunt you if you do.

Moving on to August's Business Tips - Event Organising
Most companies need to organise events in one form or another often involving clients, staff and stakeholders. Events don't just happen – they involve preparation and organisation.

Date - Plan carefully
Make sure your event doesn't clash with anything important. When the event is to take place could be influenced by a number of factors; time sensitive launch, annual conference, availability of key speakers etc. Remember to check the diary so there are no clashes.

Venue – Research and book well in advance
The nature of your event and delegates will greatly influence the type of venue. There are many free venue finding companies and they are a real time-saver. The good ones will know the venues they suggest, have visited and got feedback from previous clients. However, you should still visit a venue yourself before you make your final selection.

Budget – Be realistic!
Is your budget big enough for the type of event you are planning. Whether you're a cash-rich company, a public service organisation, a charity – there should always be a budget. This is important for financial control and organisational discipline. So, know your figures.

Checklist – don't go anywhere without one!
Write out a checklist of jobs that need to be done such as catering, decoration, entertainment etc and delegate them to your team (if you have one!) Your checklist is one of the essentials of running a successful event.

Getting people there – all important PR!
Don't leave home without a good PR company in tow! Well, I would say that wouldn't I? Use your company newsletter, website, adverts, press releases to targeted magazines and newspapers to help publicise your event. Try using the services of a PR company to help promote your event to the right people.
