How has the credit crunch affected you?
In some shape or form, we have all been affected by the downturn in the economic climate, the boom-turned-bust has lead to risks as well as opportunities. We put our house on the market two months ago and even during this short time, my husband and I have noticed dramatic price reductions with houses we've been interested in viewing. We're not talking about a few thousand pounds, it's more like tens of thousands, with one house price in particular dropping by £50K! Staggering. The flip side is that houses we couldn't afford a year ago, are now within reach.
I know people who are no longer buying organic produce, they're having to think carefully about the pennies and the weekly shopping bill. I have one friend who cannot afford petrol for her car and is now car sharing and getting public transport, wherever she can. Another friend has stopped his golf lessons and cancelled his gym membership, another has been made redundant twice in six months, the list goes on. Has it affected you?
Aneela Rose PR has been invited to judge the applications for the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards, a brand new award launching in October. This is a celebration of business success and entrepreneurial spirit across Sussex, quite ironic in the current climate but what a commendable idea. In the face of such commercial negativity everywhere you turn, apart from the public sector, I believe this is a much needed boost for the local business community and we are delighted to be involved.
Based on historical downturns, the first departments of any company to see their budget trimmed are those that do not improve the bottom line quickly. PR and Marketing is often cut back during hard times. Fortunately, at Aneela Rose PR, our clients understand PR and believe in PR longevity knowing that spending when times are hard will help towards keeping their company profile in the spotlight raising their survival rate during tough times. During the last few months, we're delighted to have won a hat-trick of new clients, PR has not died, yet.
September's Business Tips – following on from last month's event organising, here are some further thoughts on event management, my top hotlist!
Plan like there's no tomorrow!
The one thing you fail to deal with in advance will be the one thing that gives you trouble.
The art of delegation
Only delegate those tasks you can do yourself.
Communicate Communicate Communicate!
Communicate readily, give as many people as reasonably possible the opportunity to be involved.
Be direct, you don't have time to pussyfoot around
If someone fails to deliver, speak to the person concerned as soon as possible. Explain your concern and the implications. Ask for their help. Make instructions and details as clear and specific as possible – you may be held to account for them later.
Check and check again!
Check once, check twice and when you're sure – check again.
Don't be scared of setting a deadline
Have a cut-off point for changes beyond which you will not go.
Next month – Why spend on PR when times are tough?
