Glamorous Times

I still think that Florida is a really beautiful place to spend the winter. The weather is just wonderful and the views of the many river inlets are incredible. The weather makes life so easy and just sitting at the many outdoor cafes is delightful and there is so much to do. I was invited to some of the Florida screenings for the Film Festival and met an incredible lady, Oscar-winning songwriter Carol Connors, who started out with a song written by Phil Spector, called "To Know Him Is To Love Him" then went on to co-write the film Rocky. She has been nominated for 10 major music awards: Emmy's, Grammy's, Golden Globes and two Oscars.

But now it's off to the Cannes Film Festival and to enjoy some more fun in the sun. I am taking some film projects to see what advice I can get and maybe make some good contacts. Last year I tested the water as you can see in the archives of the magazine but this year I am taking it more seriously.  I remember the 80's where I spent 10 successive years writing for magazines and even my own publication.

The Last of the Big Spenders?

They were very glamorous times and the last of the big spending. The parties were magnificent and the people were just incredible and so professional.  Last year I found it very money-oriented; a sort of pack 'em in and charge them as much as you can. The gigantic tents on the beach in front of the elegant restaurants are for mass parties rather than the very exclusive parties for true VIP's. Nowadays the industry has taken a change of direction and there are a lot of independent films making money.

I am going with my attorney friend, Inger Garcia, and my 'City Wealth' publisher friend Karen Jones.  I will report on our adventures in the next issue.

It has been a hectic month with seeing the many business closures and the new fashion of not spending.  The trouble is our economy almost stopped and it was quite a turn round. However, now it seems to be at least easing up a little but I think we have got used to it rather than it has got any better. I remember the 90's recession lasted for about 7 years and then it just apparently came out of nowhere.  House prices started to reach the sky and now they are back down again. But there are always places to make, or save, money and a little improvisation goes a long way.

Not such a small snack

I noticed that it is last out on national TV. Yes, many restaurants have 4 times as much salt as you need for one day in one meal, so beware when eating out that you choose your meal carefully. To give you some idea here are some shocking facts that make an innocent burger look not so innocent.

Just look at the calories in this cheeseburger from one of the burger outlets:

Calories: 1466
Fat: 98

One cheeseburger contains more than a day and a thirds worth of fat grams. That is the fat content for four meals - 74% of a daily calorie intake.

What about a harmless Taco? Get a load of this:

Fish Tacos with sauce, re-fried beans and rice:

Calories:  2,440
Fat 159g (36 g saturated)
184 g carbohydrates

Fish is usually a good option but not this choice.

The Food industry is making a killing and it's making us sick!

There is a new film coming out like 'Supersize Me' that will be exposing the food industry and it has a trailer that you may find interesting. It looks to be a really good eye opener.  It is very well produced to make you want to watch more. Here is the link: http://www.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/foodinc/  It's well worth watching.

You hear a farmer saying, "If you can grow a chicken in 43 days why would you want to grow it in three months." and we are eating this.  Everything is faster, fatter, bigger and cheaper. "Sounds like money to me," says the farmer. The film is contains what the food producers don't want you to know. If you knew this stuff you wouldn't want to eat anything.

My friend Jaqui was looking in on one of my boats and there was some milk in the fridge. She smelled it and it was fine. She had some tea with the milk in it and then realized it had been there for three months. She was horrified and asked me what's this white stuff we're now drinking?"

Weight can 'fuel preventable cancer'
Almost 19,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with cancer that could have been prevented if they were a healthy weight, an expert says.

Professor Martin Wiseman said if everyone had a body mass index (BMI) less than 25 it would make a big dent in the incidence of cancer.
Cancers of the breast, bowel, kidney, pancreas, esophagus and womb lining are among those linked to obesity.
Professor Wiseman is an adviser for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).
The WCRF recommends that people try to be as lean as possible without becoming underweight.

A Stark Warning

"The evidence that being overweight puts you at increased risk of cancer is stronger now than ever before and we now say that, after not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing you can do for cancer prevention.
"This is the reason we recommend people aim to be as lean as possible without becoming underweight."
However, Professor Wiseman said a recent survey had showed that almost 40% still did not know that excess body fat is a cause of cancer.

Diet Soda Is Poison

I had to stop at one of the convenience stores and just wanted to have something to eat.  I found many snacks contained as their sweetener, a synthetic chemical called aspartame, a.k.a. NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful.
After seeing 'Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World', which proves without any doubt how dangerous this synthetic sweetener can be.

Aspartame, which is in thousands of processed foods labeled "lite" or "diet", was synthesized in 1965 by a G. D. Searle chemist who, when he was trying to create an anti-ulcer drug, combined two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine and found that the resulting dipeptide (a molecule consisting of two amino acids) had an extremely sweet taste to the tongue. Aspartame soon was a product that could compete in the low calorie food industry. In 1974 it obtained FDA approval. However, the FDA approval was rescinded six months later because of toxic reactions and concerns of a number of scientists. These scientists believed it was a lethal poison!

Searle's CEO at the time was Donald Rumsfeld, which is why some people prefer to call the Aspartame Disease as Rumsfeld's Disease.

Tips:

Good news! It seems that there is a cream that 'does' banish wrinkles and it can be bought on the high street. I haven't tried or been asked to promote it. I just noticed it in one of the papers and was impressed.  It has been researched at the University of Manchester with a year-long study. It was found that not only did the cream reduce wrinkles but it also improved the appearance of skin damaged by sunlight. The name is Boots No.7 Protect & Intense Beauty Serum.  I hope this is the first step to getting back the elasticity in the skin.

If you do visit Florida in the winter 'stone crabs' are unique to Florida and they are fantastic. They are caught fresh and you eat just the claws. What's different is that they don't kill the crab and the claws grow back.
