During our lives more changes have occurred, more progress has been made that any previous millennium in the development of humankind. It is almost impossible to select the most important idea in recent years. What would you choose? The entire telephone industry was turned upside down when Nicholas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, had a Great Idea and founded Skype in 2005.
They were part of the VOIP ( voice -over- Internet protocol) movement in 2005 that redefined the way telephone calls were made. VOIP calls are placed over the Internet, using the same underlying transport technology that a Web browser uses. Their particular spin was to create a business model in which the basic service is free.
Ideas come about to satisfy a need or an ideal. According to Zennstrom
" We developed Skype to provide new possibilities, dramatically improving a communications system that is more than 100 years old. With broadband becoming ubiquitous and increasing numbers of people gaining access to affordable Wi-Fi, the time was right to unleash a disruptive technology that would let the whole world talk for free. We developed the original version of the Skype software with about 12 people-none of whom were telecom engineers. We started with a team who could look at a new problem with fresh eyes. We wanted to ensure our developers wouldn't be constrained by old ways of looking at the problem. "
When you become a Skype user you use your computer to call other Skype users free anywhere in the world.
Traditional phone companies charge prices based on the distance a call travels, but it's been several years since distance has had any connection to the cost of a call.
The pair sold Skype to eBay for $2.6 billion and ignited a revolution in communication
That has tens of millions of customers communicating across the globe.

Great Idea ...... I'm told that Satellite Navigation systems have been a godsend to many UK's motorists, not least sales representatives, taxi drivers, and those whose days are far more productive now they don't spend hours wandering around B roads getting lost anymore. Many people can't remember what life was like before sat nav came along, but for me it was last Thursday.
After tallying up the hours that I lost in recent trips to Cheltenham, Norwich, Wembly and Poole I decided there had to be a better way then stopping in Petrol Stations and /or asking people on the street for directions.
So last week in desperation I popped into Halfords and purchased a Garmin which I was told was a Global Positioning Leader (GPS) both in sales and critical acclaim. I found it to be easy to set up and use and most importantly I found Jurys Hotel in Leeds without having to ask anyone! Highly recommended!

Sometimes a Great Idea replaces a bad idea.
Westminster Council announced on Friday, that cars will no longer be clamped or towed away under new driver friendly parking rules.
Other councils are expected to follow suit after new guidance from the Department for Transport.
The RAC last night, described the move as a breakthrough for common sense.
The Deputy Director Sheila Rainger, according to the Daily Express said: these new guidelines say parking enforcement should not be about making money but keeping traffic moving."
