Celebrity Stalker: Retro Chic
From: Alice Howard

The vintage scene has returned! Legendary Queen VB (who you may remember my first encounter with earlier, as she is also known as the Physic Bag Lady) is the name that is hypnotising London town yet again!  But this time it's down to her other mesmerising tool,  in the shape of her eloquent vintage handbag range that can be seen on the arms of many famous folk too!

HN (that's Harvey Nichols to you) is the store to be at right now - Bullis's bags have lit up the halls like a Christmas tree with the Knightsbridge set all flocking to grab a bag. My prediction is that these are set to sell out fast! Aren't I lucky to have reserved my VB adornment well in advance and just in time for Christmas too!

Victoria explains, "Retro is timeless. It never goes out of style. In fact all the major designers are basing their handbags on styles from the 1920's through the 1970's. This season for example, some designers have added a hand-strap at the back of clutches; this style was widely used during the 1920's into the 1940's.

Unlike the mass-produced handbags seen everywhere today, the handbags of yesteryear are high quality pieces made individually by hand in Europe or the United States. Each bag has a story to tell about the time period from which it hails, the long-gone designer who artfully crafted it and the stylish woman who once carried it. If I find a handbag that still has a coin, a handkerchief or a mirror in it, I leave it in to honour the original owner."

If I could step back in-time I would want to walk in the days of the 1920's – I can imagine myself as a 'flapper' and I bet that my arm candy would have been an equal match to one of lady Victoria's collection – Or perhaps it would have been the 'Great Gatsby' himself?!

Whatever your occasion is make sure that your handbag is a match! The two most popular type of retro bags these days are the beaded and metal mesh examples as currently shown at Harvey Nichols, and day bags from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. The Victoria Bullis Collection can be found in the International Handbag Room on the ground floor at Harvey Nichols, Knightsbridge in London.

PSYCHIC HANDBAG READING

When I was in London recently there were pictures of Queen Elizabeth everywhere, as she had just opened Parliament. So many of these pictures included a particular gold lame handbag that I started to pay attention to it and began to wondering what sort of a handbag she would be wearing next!

One day that week I was walking, literally, into the handbag section of Harrod's in Knightsbridge. It 'hit me' (psychically) that it would be fun to do a Psychic Handbag Reading – on Queen Elizabeth II!

I have always loved accessories. Especially handbags. So much so that I now actually buy and sell them in both London and US. Actually, if truth be told, I do a lot more buying than selling ... ! Besides dealing in them (which is a lot of fun for me) I also do – 'Psychic Handbag Readings!' Someone in the buying department of a large London department store who used to hear me on Virgin (now Absolute) Radio, asked me if I thought I could combine the psychic realm with fashion, with what she called 'Psychic Handbag Readings.' I loved the idea, did them a couple times for that store – and have since made it a part of my repertoire.

Re, Queen Elizabeth, she must have one of the largest collections of handbags on the face of the planet. Also, I figured that she probably has nothing in her wardrobe that could be called current – and hasn't for eons. I decided to find out what I could about Queen Elizabeth and her handbags. Surprisingly, there was not much. However, from what I could find I realized that pretty much everything is what I would call, today, vintage. I began to look at her handbag choices with a great deal more interest.

Besides her style choices in handbags is – what she carries in them! And as it turns out ... is quite a lot. There is actually a book What's in the Queen's Handbag: And Other Royal Secrets by Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton. Apparently she uses each bag she totes, to communicate with her staff in a very subtle way. If at a dinner she will place her handbag on the tabletop exactly 5 minutes before she wants guests to end the dinner! If her bag is placed on the floor it is a signal that she is not finding the conversation interesting and wants to escape.

Some of what is found in each of her handbags is: an S-shaped meat hook that she places on the edge of the dinner table to hang her handbag from, so it does not touch floor; also, are a collection of good luck charms, most of which being gifts from her children (as apparently reported in the Daily Express). She also carries photos, mints and a couple of crossword puzzles which her servants cut out of newspapers for her. Tiny, miniature animals such horses and dogs are there also – she sees them as talisman. There is also a metal make-up case made by Prince Phillip which was presented to her as a wedding gift.

While I was working on studiously examining the content of her gold lame handbag she carried at the opening of Parliament, Winston Churchill (one of my Spirit Guides who constantly makes me laugh) appeared and said please quote me on this; "The dear lady really knows how to recycle her handbags." I said to him, "Winston, I am absolutely not going to say this." He replied, "Why not? You know you have quoted me on other matters over the years ... things that were much, much, much more risky aka risquι." I still adamantly said, "No, I would not pass along this comment." He then said to me, "Victoria, would you finally let me help you to be more playful?" (... he said this with a lot of passion).

So, with great reluctance (and I really mean this) I am channeling what he wanted me to say right here.

Between the amazing superstitions I began discover about Queen Elizabeth, via her handbag, and even more information that Winston Churchill was sending me about her and what he knows about and her handbag I decided that it has to be carried into my next column; ie, – Part II will be much more interesting than Part I!

Stay tuned for more next month ... re bizarre information on the Queen's need to have with her at all times a 'lucky handbag'.

2010 ... A NEW DECADE

Each year has some sort of cosmic, or – you might even call it – Divine theme to it: and, every month has its own component, related to that bigger theme.

This past year's theme has had to do with the concept of creating more prosperity.

The theme for 2010 is about HOPE.

From time to time throughout the coming year, 2010, I will be giving information re hope and how to use it as a catalyst to clean out old unwanted patterns ( ... including depression) and how to transform it into a mode of creation for whatever you want to achieve or do.

Hope as with any other emotion, can also be thought of as a: quality. Another way of saying this is that hope can also be considered to be a vibration.  Also any feeling, attitude, desire or intent (if you look at these as being vibrations) can be enhanced or diminished – depending on whether you want more of it, or – less of it!  Additionally, I believe that there are no upper limits to any quality or vibration ... love, prosperity, hope, gratitude, joy (etc) can all be increased exponentially, throughout the rest of our lives. And beyond.

A great way to begin adding more hope to your life is to just intend that this IS what you are doing. Intention is extremely powerful. I suggest checking out the book, The Power of Intention by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer ... I actually prefer the cd version (www.amazon.com).

IS IT A GIFT OR A PRESENT?

Most people assume that a gift and a present are the same thing. However there is a slight but distinct difference: A gift is something that someone purchases, hoping that he or she is giving something that the recipient would truly love to have. A present is something that means a lot to you to give someone – and you present it to him or her.

For example, if the person you are giving a sweater to loves the colour red but your favorite colour is blue; you would never wear red yourself. But because it is a gift and you want to make the recipient happy, you purchase a red sweater. An example of a present might be a particular kind of vase that you think would look good on a friend's sofa table, and you purchase it for her, liking the idea of giving it to her.

CELEBRITIES GIVING BACK

People tend to think celebrities are callous self-centered people, and sometime they are! However a large proportion of them grew up without much money, or struggled to pay bills for years before becoming a success. They often are committed to giving back to those less fortunate. Also many, including some I know, purely give out of gratitude for having such wonderful lives.

Here are a few of the many celebrities who are volunteering during the current holidays, and the charities they support – by working at 'soup kitchens', by hefty financial contributions and by literally going to places where people are in need of support:

Kirk Douglas and his wife Anne hold an annual star-studded event at the Los Angeles Mission (a nonprofit organization serving the homeless living on the streets of downtown's Hope Central known as Skid Row) every year in which many celebrities help as volunteers to feed the homeless.

Bono has been involved in charity work since 1979. He is on the Forbes' Generous Celebrity List for his work with Debt AIDS Trade Africa (DATA) against the spread of AIDS and for debt relief in Africa. Bono is known for being extremely generous during the holidays. See a message from Bono on the Millennium Development Goals (www.youtube.com).

View Mike Meyers in "Widening Divide", a PSA (public service announcements are aired by television stations throughout holidays) for the Food Bank For New York City.

David and Victoria Beckham along with their three boys have just retuned from spending a few days with US troops in Germany, where they stayed in their barracks to show support for all soldiers in Afghanistan. Also, UNICEF ambassador David Beckham visited a clinic in Cape Town on his own in December. He was supporting UNICEF's Mothers to Mothers programme which supplies anti-viral medicine to HIV pregnant women to prevent babies being born with HIV. "The solution is cheap and simple ... and saves hundreds of thousands of children each year," says Becks.

All proceeds from Bob Dylan's new release 'Christmas in the Heart' will be donated to Feeding America.

SPAS

Look for my review of the sleek Daniel Hersheson Spa in my next column. I had an amazing treatment with Debbie Thomas there; she provided some information about the products and machines of which there are many. (I was not able to connect with her enough after the treatment to give her just due. She, like I do, works all the time, and hadn't been able to get back to me prior to the column's deadline).
