Welcome to the August 2008 round up of news and views on UFOs, alien abductions, crop circles, ghosts, the paranormal, the unexplained, the weird and the wonderful.

The X-Files - I Want To Believe

The must-see movie of the summer is here.  Mulder and Scully are back in the new X-Files film, released on 25th July in America and 1st August in the UK.  Sub-titled I Want to Believe, the movie is an amazing rollercoaster ride of adventure, mystery and conspiracy.  The truth is out there.  There has already been massive media coverage of this film including several articles and features focusing on real life mysteries and conspiracy theories.  Go to www.xfiles.com for more details and if you only see one movie this year, make it this one.

Summer of the Saucers

Britain has gone UFO crazy.  As reported in this column last month, a spectacular encounter between a UFO and a police helicopter took place on 8th June in South Wales, over the military base at RAF St Athan, close to Cardiff International Airport.  The helicopter, with a crew of 3 on board, was about to land when it was in near collision with a UFO.  Initially described as being disc-shaped and covered in lights, early media reports suggested a chase had taken place, with the helicopter pursuing the UFO south over the Bristol Channel and only breaking off pursuit when the UFO proved too quick and when they ran low on fuel.  After the story broke on 20th June the story changed and the police were careful to use the phrase "unusual aircraft" as opposed to UFO.  Additionally, while confirming the sighting, they denied a chase had taken place.  Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the story was a quote from the MoD Press Office, where a spokesperson made the following comment: "But it is certainly not advisable for police helicopters to go chasing what they think are UFOs".  It has now emerged that numerous other people in the area saw the UFO.  The story generated massive media coverage but was followed by an even bigger story, when it transpired that a few hours before the police helicopter incident, soldiers at Tern Hill barracks in Shropshire saw several UFOs fly directly over their base.  One of them filmed the objects on his mobile phone.  The Sun ran the story on the front page under the headline Army Spot UFOs Over Shropshire.

UFOs In The Sun

After The Sun ran the stories about the UFO sightings involving the crew of the police helicopter and the soldiers filming UFOs over their base, the newspaper made an appeal for anyone else with photos or videos of UFOs to come forward.  They were inundated.  People who might otherwise have kept quiet felt able to speak out.  People who previously might have feared being ridiculed or disbelieved suddenly realised that if UFOs were being seen by police officers and the military, it was OK to come forward, especially when the media were taking it seriously.  All The Sun UFO stories, photos and film footage can be found on a special part of their website.  Type in http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/ufos/ or just go to their website and search the site using the term UFO.  People often complain that the media ignore the UFO phenomenon.  Not this year.  Well done, my Sun.
Crop Circle Season 2008
August traditionally sees the highlight of the annual crop circle season, with the most spectacular formations often appearing in the last few weeks before the fields are harvested.  There have already been some spectacular formations this summer, but something tells me there may be more to come.  Check out websites such as www.cropcircleconnector.com and www.lucypringle.co.uk for the latest news and the latest photos.

Crop Circle Conference 2008

On 9, 10 and 11th August the Wiltshire Crop Circle Study Group will be holding their 13th annual conference in Marlborough.  The event will feature lectures, workshops, music, dowsing and even the chance to take a helicopter flight to view the best and most spectacular crop circles in the area.  Speakers include Jaime Maussan, Hamish Miller and Tricia McCannon and as well as crop circles, other subjects such as UFOs and sacred geometry will be covered.  Check out www.wccsg.com for further details.

Large Hadron Collider

As trailed in previous columns, the largest machine ever constructed, the Large Hadron Collider, is about to go live.  After a series of delays and even a lawsuit, it is expected that the machine will begin to operate in August.  The particle accelerator has a circumference of 27 kilometres and straddles the borders of France and Switzerland, near Geneva.  Buried underground, the plan is to smash protons together at virtually the speed of light and thus recreate conditions that are thought to have existed a fraction of a second after the Big Bang.  Scientists hope that the results may shed light on some of the great mysteries of our time, including Dark Matter and the search for extra dimensions.  It may also detect new and exotic particles, such as the Higgs Boson, the existence of which has, thus far, only been theoretically postulated.  The first beams are expected to be circulated shortly, with the first high energy collisions being planned shortly thereafter.  Expect to see massive media coverage in the run up to its activation.  In the meantime, check out www.cern.ch/lhc for more information.
